The Gamechanger: Neuma 4 Tattoo Pen!
The Neuma 4 is a tattoo pen with a rotary drive and a newly developed transmission, which makes the pen feel like a coil machine when working and thus also has a similar application on the skin.
At the same time, you retain all the advantages of a rotary pen, such as reliability, easy configurability, low maintenance and high ergonomics.
Due to the coil machine-like behavior, the needle pierces straight into the skin, which causes far less trauma and produces cleaner results.
The highlight: The cams
A cam is a cam that changes the dwell time of the needle and the time it takes to enter and exit the skin.
What is meant by this is: How quickly in and out again and how long does the needle stay in the skin during this process and why at all?

Each tattoo style comes with different requirements. Which machine with which feature do you use for which style?
The stroke determines how fast, short=hard or slow=soft, the needle hits the skin and how quickly it retracts. In relation to the cycle of a complete needle movement – i.e. 1 x there and 1x back again – time span = 100%, the needle remains in/under the skin for different lengths of time (dwell time) due to a change in stroke.
In general, the lower this percentage, the faster the hand movement can be. Higher percentages are better suited for slower hand movements.
That's why Neuma has developed four different "cams". Each cam changes the dwell time in a different way and is adapted to the respective tattoo style. They allow you to tattoo any style of tattoo with one machine by changing the speed and the way the needle penetrates and lingers into the skin.
And since each machine comes with 4 cams, you only need one machine: The Neuma 4 Tattoo Pen.
- the 20% Cam: Ideal for straight and clean lines – quick in, quick out. This cam is already in your Neuma 4 tattoo pen when it is delivered
- the 28% cam is ideal for quick shading – a little slower in, but fast, as at 20% out again
- 33% Cam is ideal for smooth transitions in multi-layer gradients and slower shading – even a little slower in and as fast as 20% out

Changing a cam is very easy: the pen can be easily opened with a twisting movement. After that, you can simply remove the inner cam and replace it with another one.
The cams also regulate the needle protrusion: the stroke.
You can choose between 2.75, 3.6 or 4.2mm. There are 4 cams for each. You can order these individually or as a set. As standard, the machines are equipped with the 4.2mm version.
The needle protrusion can be infinitely changed by a rotary knob on the top of the Neuma 4 tattoo pen.
In addition, the hit can be changed by replacing the bearing arm. The heavier the bearing arm, the harder the hit. A 5g brass bearing arm is pre-installed.
For a softer hit, there's a separately available 1g aluminum bearing arm. Here, too, the replacement is relatively easy - a corresponding Allen key is of course included.
Overall, the Neuma 4 Tattoo Pen is equipped with one of the most configurable tattoo machines worldwide.
What exactly makes the difference?
The fundamental difference between coil machines and rotary machines is, of course, first and foremost the type of drive.
The developers of Neuma have taken a closer look at the differences and found that they relate specifically to the effect and behavior of the needles. These differences influence both your work behavior and feel and the interaction with the customer's skin.
Why? Or: How does the needle penetrate the skin and how long does it stay there? And why this is more important than you think.
In coil machines, the drive is direct or linear. This means that the springs of the coil machine and thus the needle rod / needle are moved up and down by electromagnetic pulses and very straight. The needle quickly pushes into the skin and comes back quickly – it "" because it "only" moves in two directions.
In rotary machines, the needles first spring back against the resistance of the skin due to the rotating movement and only then penetrate the skin. The rotating drive is also transferred to the needle, which means that it "shovels" into the skin more than it stings, which can lead to additional trauma to the skin tissue. This effect is not quite as pronounced with rotary pens, but this does not change the dwell time.
If you take a closer look at the time it takes for a needle to penetrate and exit, it is noticeable that the length of time the needle stays in the skin varies greatly between the different types of drive: With rotary machines, the needle stays in the skin for up to 40% of this amount of time, compared to about 10-15% for a bobbin machine.
The longer dwell time and the "shoveling" of the needles can lead to "snagging", which traumatizes the tissue more strongly. Then you have to change your approach, e.g. to achieve good lines or a desired effect.
